Role Purpose

Participate in and as appropriate supervise the day to day nursing care of residents and guests. Assist the residents and guests on their care pathways to independence.

Responsibilities

Staff Management

  • Exercise general and professional supervision of nursing and care staff on shift
  • Lead and work with nursing and care staff to ensure a high standard of care for residents and guests
  • Assist with recruitment and selection in the absence of the Clinical Services Manager/ Senior Staff Nurse
  • Oversee induction and performance reviews of staff and assist with staff training as required
  • Monitor performance and assist in identifying training and development needs in accordance with laid down requirements
  • Supervise nursing and care activities according to pre-set care plans
  • Ensure the updating and adaptation of rotas as necessary to ensure adequate cover in the nursing and care team, keeping within allocated staff establishment hours

Financial Management

  • Be responsible for petty cash on outings as required
  • Assist guests with their money and accurately account for same

Professional

  • Carry out procedures for assessment of residents and guests needs and ensuring care plans are implemented and monitored, so as to meet their physical and emotional requirements
  • Carry out all procedures relating to the administration of medication when required, as specified by the current legislation and NMC and registration guidelines
  • Carry out all procedures relating to the personal care and nutritional needs of residents and guests, dealing with emergencies as they arise
  • Be aware of the emotional and pastoral/spiritual needs of staff, residents, guests and their relatives, and provide support and guidance as appropriate

Risk Management

  • Ensure the audit, correct storage, return or disposal, safety and recording of all drugs administered by nursing staff
  • Practice universal precautions according to the written infection control procedures
  • Ensure that all waste is correctly identified and disposed of
  • Carry out and maintain risk assessments
  • Ensure that health & safety at work and COSHH procedures are adhered to for the protection of all staff, residents, guests and volunteers at the Centre and in respect of equipment, furniture and fittings
  • Report any accidents or hazards (real and potential) to the senior nurse in charge or senior manager

Administration

  • Ensure record keeping and documentation meets relevant legal and statutory requirements as well as best practice
  • Monitor medical supply requests and order within budget
  • Assist with arrivals and departures of residents and guests ensuring a welcoming atmosphere at all times
  • Provide residents and guests with information, advice and support in the management of their condition
  • Liaise with residents and guests own GPs or other social and health care professionals to provide information for ongoing care needs
  • Agree and implement a suitable social activity and therapy plan for each Guest
  • Participate in outings, in-house entertainment and recreational activities with the Guests as required
  • Assist in the rehabilitation care pathway as agreed by the MDT

Other

  • Take part in and contribute to meetings
  • Constantly analyse processes and procedures contributing constructively to the improvement of services
  • Act as the staff nurse in charge as required
  • Participate in staff performance reviews and staff training as required, and assume responsibility for own personal professional development plan
  • Provide as much flexible assistance as possible with sickness/absence and holiday cover
  • Respect confidentiality of information according to policy
  • The post holder will be working in a developing environment and he/she will therefore be expected to undertake other appropriate duties as required for the effective operation of the centre
  • The post holder will be required to apply for an enhanced Disclosure check

In addition, the jobholder is required to be link personnel in an associated role such as manual handling, be flexible in approach to work and confident / scrupulous in the handling of cash.

Person Specification

  • Ability to make important decisions affecting the health and welfare of the residents and guests
  • Ability to make decisions, in line with policy and guidance, regarding the day-to-day operation of the centre in the absence of the senior management team
  • Professional post-qualification experience at least one year
  • Good Organisational skills
  • IT literacy in Microsoft office
  • Neuro Disability experience / Neuro Rehabilitation experience is desirable, not essential
